14. 6. 2024

The second year of the KVIFF Talents program will present 6 ambitious projects in Karlovy Vary

Three feature-film concepts and three series concepts have been selected for this year’s edition of KVIFF Talents. In the Feature Pool, director Inbetween Worlds will present her feature debut Inbetween Worldsbuilding on the success of her acclaimed short film Love Dad.The project blends live action with collage animation and reflects the director’s personal experience of oscillating between two cultures and belonging to both from two different perspectives. The second Feature Pool project, Letters to the Future is set in contemporary Ukraine; the Ukrainian screenwriter and director Myro Klochko grounds the story in a snow-covered world, following a tale of love and a tangled family lineage. The final project within the Feature Pool is the charming fairy tale Rusalkawhose author Hana Neničková found inspiration in the tradition of Czech folklore; while rooted in classic motifs, the story features naturalistic characters and brings in universal themes of the search for love and self-identification.

Creative Pool will introduce the coming-of-age series Spectrum by Igor Smitka, Wanda Kaprálová and Klára Mamojková remarkable for its perspective on queer relationships not only through the lens of a young couple, but also through religious beliefs, family expectations and social conventions.

Another series project will be presented by the duo Veronika Jelšíková a Petr Vlček.Their project Into the Endless Unknowns is intended primarily for young audiences, aiming—through the use of songs from contemporary Czech musicians—to show in a gentle manner that many situations in children’s lives are not as terrifying as they seem, and that what they experience is completely normal. The final series project is based on a real case connected to the former Czech Casting platform. Authors Jan Černý, Terézia Halamová a Natalia Pavlove explore, under the working title Casting , the stories of young girls drawn through manipulation into the world of illegal pornographic production.

Beyond the opportunity to present their projects to potential partners, selected authors will also receive financial support for development and long-term mentoring from international film professionals, as well as support in creating a proof-of-concept video. Creators from the Feature Pool will also take part in an autumn residency in Karlovy Vary, enabling them to work more deeply on their screenplays.
